San Benito police arrest five individuals in shoplifting ring

San Benito police arrested five individuals charged with shoplifting merchandise from a local department store.

In the evening hours of Saturday, June 8, officers were dispatched to the Bealls Department store located at 850 W. Business 77 in reference to a theft of polo shirts from the store.

An employee reported that she witnessed two females enter the store and unfolded bags and then began stuffing the shirts into the bags.

The suspects ran out  the store and into a waiting vehicle, but the employee was able to get the description of the car, a Dodge Charger, and the license plate to the officer.

A patrol unit located the vehicle, with five occupants,  and made a traffic stop on the driver identified as, Ida Betancourt, 27, and informed her that her vehicle matched that of one being used in a reported theft at the Bealls Department store.

Betancourt gave consent to the officer to search the vehicle and the officer found two large Aeropostale bags filled with merchandise and the shirts, in the trunk, under a spare tire.

Betancourt and the other passengers, identified as Angel Hernandez, 22, Liliana Guerrero, 20, Yessenia Nunez, 18, and Diana Cordova, 20, were arrested and charged with organized criminal activity and organized retail theft.

Yessenia Nunez, Liliana Guerrero and Diana Cordova were placed on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer and all five had bonds set at $20,000.
