Police arrest "Mariachi Bandit" in store robbery case
WESLACO, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — He's known as the Mariachi bandit and now he's facing deportation. The suspect, from Mexico, will likely be deported after police say he robbed a convenience store while wearing a Mariachi outfit.
Weslaco police are calling Jesus Perez, the "Mariachi Bandit", after security cameras caught him early Monday morning. The video shows Perez walking into the Stripes store on Texas Boulevard and Highway 83 east in Weslaco and forcing the store clerk to empty the cash register.
Perez was caught, in part, because he was allegedly still wearing the Mariachi pants from a performance earlier that night. Detectives found a picture of the mariachi band and compared the photo to the mariachi bandit.
Weslaco Police Chief, Mike Kelly, stated, "It was like, wait a minute, that's our guy right there and it was like we were, I don't want to say we were shocked...you don't have too many robbers wear mariachi pants while they're robbing. They are pretty distinctive."
