Police arrest couple on assault charges

Police were called to a home, in reference to harassment, and end up arrest two people for assaulting each other.

Officers were called on Wednesday, April 16, to a home located on the 200 block of Chapman Street in San Benito.

Upon arrival, Salvador Mercado Jr., 47, informed a officer that his ex-girlfriend, Camillia Perez, 25, had arrived to his home demanding a camera she claimed Mercado had possession of in the home.

Mercado was questioned and  showed the officer a cell phone video of Perez arriving to his residence, throwing a drink at him, assaulting him, soiling his clothes and then threatening to have cartel gang members kill him. Mercado also stated that Perez exited a vehicle, caught him, and struck him several times on his body and kicking him in the head.

During Mercado's reporting of the incident, Perez showed up and claimed to officers that Mercado had held a knife to her throat, earlier in the day,  leaving small cuts on her neck and chin.

Officers placed both Mercado and Perez under arrest with Mercado being charged with aggravated assault and Perez charged with assault and terroristic threat. Mercado was handed a bond of $30,000 and Perez $20,000.
