BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — A Mexican citizen has pleaded guilty to being an illegal immigrant and in possession of a firearm.
Jose Luis Rodriguez-Treto, 28, was driving a black Ford Escape on the highway and activated flashing white lights, similar to those used in law enforcement vehicles, to pass an another vehicle. The other vehicle, operated by Homeland Security Investigators, believed they were being pulled over by a unmarked police car.
As Treto passed the agents they noticed a car seat located in the back seat and pulled him over. Agents did search the vehicle and found a loaded pistol magazine in his pocket, a pistol hidden in the glove box, another in a diaper bag, a rifle under the back seat, police scanners, a badge stating "special police" and other law enforcement paraphernalia.
Senior U.S. District Judge Hilda G. Tagle has set sentencing for June 26, 2013, at which time he faces up to 10 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. Rodriguez-Treto will remain in custody pending that hearing.
