Licensed firearms dealer sentenced to prison for making straw purchases for cartel
McAllen, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — A Hidalgo City resident is sentenced to prison for his involvement in buying firearms for a Mexican cartel.
A United States District Judge sentenced Ricardo Cantu Jr., 32, to two and half years in federal prison and three years of supervised release after he pleaded guilty for making false statements with information required to be kept by federally licensed firearms dealers.
An investigation, on July 6, 2010, began when ATF and Homeland Security agents responded to the Hidalgo port of entry in reference to several firearms and rounds of ammunition being smuggled into Mexico by another person.
The investigation led officers to discover that the firearms had been purchased the same day by Cantu, who later admitted, of being hired by members of the Gulf cartel to straw purchase the firearms.
