Jury finds woman guilty of possession of marijuana
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — A jury has found a Brownsville woman guilty of possession of marijuana.
The jury found Jessica Garcia, 22, guilty of attempting to smuggle 188 pounds of marijuana in her vehicle.
Garcia was crossing from Matamoros, Mexico to Brownsville, Texas at the Gateway International port of entry back on December 2012.
CBP officers noticed new carpet in the rear area of her van and sent her to a secondary inspection and found 92 packages of marijuana.
Garcia alleged that she was kidnapped by a drug cartel and forced to transport the drug or be killed.
Investigators were able to show surveillance video showing Garcia crossed multiple times in the van before with no visible duress.
Garcia was sentenced to 10 years to prison and probation for five years.
