Dog owner arrested for animal cruelty after picking up his pet at animal shelter

Harlingen police arrested a dog owner for animal cruelty after being seen punching his own pet as he left the animal shelter.

On Tuesday, March 25th at around 6 p.m. police were called to the Harlingen Humane Society in reference to animal cruelty claim.

The witness advised the officer that a man had come in to pick up his dog, a Chihuahua, exited the building and then punched the dog several times with a closed fist.

Through the investigation police were able to identify the man as Raul Martinez Jr., 39, and arrested him on April 1st.

Martinez was charged with animal cruelty and handed a $5,000 bond.
