Call of suspicious activity leads to bust of cockfighting ring

WESLACO, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Hidalgo County Sheriff deputies busted a cockfighting ring after the department received calls from the public about suspicious activity at a residence.
On Saturday, February 22nd at around 2:30 p.m. the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department was dispatched to a brown brick residence located at 1930 Mile 12 North.
When deputies arrived they discovered a cockfighting arena, approximately 60 people and paraphernalia of syringes, roosters, betting board, concession stand and cash envelopes associated with the illegal activity.
All sixty individuals were released because the event had not started, but the owner of the property did confess to authorities to organizing the event.
Investigators continue to gather additional evidence to file charges on the owner and organizer of the event.
