Brownsville men plead guilty to defrauding federal government
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Two brothers have pleaded guilty to filing and falsifying information on income tax refund claims.
Edward and Robert Gutierrez were recruited, by their mother, Judy Lynn McCune, in a scheme to file fraudulent tax returns which included other family members.
Both brothers admitted to presenting false W-2 forms to a tax preparation firm and receiving a refund based on that false information.
The Gutierrez brother will be sentenced in the coming months and each face a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Judy Lynn McCune previously pleaded guilty or conspiring to defraud the federal government in a scheme to prepare federal tax returns and cash U.S. Treasury refund checks in the name of deceased individuals. They are set for sentencing on July.
