SAN BENITO, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — An alleged drunk driver is in police custody after leading authorities on a high-speed chase in San Benito early Sunday morning.
Police arrested the driver, Mario Hernandez, 34, for evading arrest in a motor vehicle, driving while intoxicated and possession of marijuana.
According to the San Benito Police Department, at 1:35 a.m., an officer witnessed Hernandez driving on the 200 block of N. Sam Houston without his headlights on. The officer attempted to make a traffic stop on Hernandez, but he sped away from authorities.
Hernandez led police down West Stenger at speeds up to 80 MPH until he lost control of his car at a construction zone near 1st Community Bank.
Following the crash, the officer approached his car, but was not able to open the door because of a faulty handle. During this time the driver yelled to law enforcement that he had a knife to his throat and would use it.
In an effort to stop Hernandez, another officer broke the driver side window and pulled him out. Authorities did not find a knife as the driver had stated.
Police searched the vehicle and found a cigarette containing marijuana, empty beer cans, a bottle of Vodka and two bags of marijuana.
Hernandez was arraigned and his bond was set at $33,000.
