Court Settles Redistricting Map Issue
STATE OF TEXAS — A federal court in San Antonio has settled the redistricting issue which will now pave the way for a May 29th election date.
The new map decision has created a District 34 seat which will be anchored in Cameron county. Outlying areas of Cameron and Hidalgo county will make up for the new District 35 seat. The new maps are being called a victory by civil rights groups who had argued that Latinos needed greater representation. Governor Rick Perry is pleased with the new decision on the redistricting map, but did comment on the time it took for the agreement, "Had the federal court done it correctly to begin with, the time, costs and inconvenience to our state could have been avoided."
