SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — “The best way to bring people to the island, is by showing them the island.”
That's the philosophy of the Port Isabel couple that operates eleven live webcams from their home. This live feed makes it possible for anyone in the world to see the perks of South Padre Island.
“At one point, we had a very, very small server. And it wasn’t six months until we had to replace that server and upgrade it. Uh, there for a while, it seemed like about every six months we were having to upgrade our server because of the amount of viewers that were coming to our cameras.”
The cameras are perched atop various island landmarks like the Pearl Hotel and South Padre Island Adventure Park.
“South Padre Island Adventure Park gives you the best of both worlds with the juxtaposition of high-tech cameras being powered by sustainable wind energy.”
“It’s the opportunity for people to view firsthand this environment. This is mother nature at its finest, and the technology that has come along with our microwave internet service as well as being able to utilize the wind energy itself enables people the opportunity to see this beauty that’s here at this island.”
SouthPadreLive.com has not only been profitable for Jerry and Jackie Reeves because of advertisements, but it's also been profitable for local businesses.
“It definitely brings more attention to the Hilton, it brings more attention to Clayton's, so yes that comes with the crowd...If you’re within driving distance, the cameras are somewhere where you can log on, check how the crowd is at Clayton’s, how the crowd is on the beach, and really determine what the weather’s like and if you, if it’s something you that you’d want to come out and drive up for."
