HARLINGEN, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — U.S.. Senator John Cornyn introduced a bill that will expand healthcare for veterans in the Rio Grande Valley and save them a long trip to san antonio.
U.S.. Senator John Cornyn is doing his best to push a bill through congress that will make lives easier for veterans in the Rio Grande Valley. The bill would expand the south texas VA healthcare center into a full pledged hospital. The VA opened a forty million dollar outpatient surgical center in harlingen in two thousand eleven. However, it lacks an emergency room and other inpatient services.
The bill would also expand the existing facility to include fifty inpatient beds, an emergency room and a full range of services to women veterans. A couple veterans told news center 23 what they think about this potential expansion.
A statement from veteran centered care coordinator, Froy Garza, said there are plans in motion to construct facilities in McAllen, Corpus Christi, Harlingen and Laredo. This would allow them to continue to monitor inpatient contracts for the rio grande valley sector.
