MISSION, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — It's a who's who of politicians who represent the Rio Grande Valley.
Senator John Cornyn, Congressman Henry Cuellar and local officials gathered at the warehouse of CiL Group, an import/export comany based in Mission.
They chose the location because rows and rows of cotton bales highlight the areas of immigration reform that could get lost in the national debate.
"With all the attention being given to the border these days, I think it's very important to make sure that we have what I like to call the smart border," Cornyn said. "That is one that strikes the right balance between security and one that then respects the important role of bi-national trade."
A stalled immigration bill sits in Washington, DC, and federal money has been sent to border towns to shore up law enforcement.
The two leading men of the event say whatever measures come, they must not slow down the big rigs carrying goods across the border.
"The security on the border is very very important, but we've got to do it in a balanced way," Cuellar said. "Where it does not impede the trade and legitimate tourism."
The men posed many questions but were short on answers. Having the Republican Cornyn and the Democrat Cuellar working together could be a good first step.
"This demonstrates not only the importance of this, but contrary to public perception, occasionally, congress can work together in a bi-partisan way to offer real solutions to our challenges," Cornyn said.
The men will soon return to the nation's capitol to see if their colleagues can feel the same way.
