It's day one of construction at the Anzalduas International bridge.
The city of McAllen along with Mission and Granjeno have teamed up with Customs and Border Protection
to improve the fairly new port of entry.

" CBP is always looking for ways to improve the services that we provide to our traveling public and this is one great example," says Felix Garza CBP Public Affairs Liaison.

Construction started at lane one this morning and it will be closed for the next 10 days. Several other lanes will also be improved.

"The traveler may find or see that some of these lanes are closed from one moment to the next because of this construction project," Garza added.

Officials say the project will take months to finish and with holidays coming up, they urge travelers to keep an eye on wait times.

"We are expecting a significant amount of traffic towards the next couple of months," Garza said, " The Easter holiday is coming up, mother's day is coming up and father's day is coming up. If they see that the wait time is more than usual, maybe they should consider taking an alternate route."

City and bridge officials are asking the public to be patient with the construction. Even though the project may cause a few headaches for travelers, officials say it'll be worth the wait in the long run.
