Congressman Filemon Vela and Democratic caucus chairman Congressman Xavier Becerra joined parents, students and administrators from NINOS Head Start to discuss the significance of the program.

"NINOS" stands for Neighbors in Need of Service and is aimed at helping children and their families create a brighter future.

Officials and board members of NINOS Head Start also listened in as parents and students spoke out about the positive impacts the program has had on their lives.

"Had it not been for this budget negotiation where we fought to restore funding for Head Start, 57,000 children throughout the country would've lost their Head Start, so we're pleased that we fought hard and got every single penny back for Head Start," said Congressman Becerra.

"A lot of the things we do in Washington from a policy standpoint have a real impact on the ground back home and visiting with the parents, teachers, administrators, and students here at NINOS Head Start really helps us drive the policy making things that we do in Washington," said Congressman Vela.

Many board members and parents say their students who participate in the Head Start program are more ahead academically than students who do not.
