Congress Keeps Government Running

New compromise bill will keep government open for a few more weeks.

The federal government will not shut down Friday, but it will be a tiny bit smaller.

The House has passed a two week stop-gap spending bill that includes $4-billion in spending cuts.

President Obama wants a long term deal on the budget and has offered House Speaker John Boehner $8-billion in spending reductions right away.

The Republican push for $100 billion in cuts got a big boost thanks to a report by the Government Accountability Office on duplication in the current budget that found 18 different federal programs to feed the poor, 100 programs to plan roads and railways and 82 programs in ten agencies to promote quality teaching.

Republicans say the duplicated programs are just part of what they'd cut.
