The Westboro Baptist Church is on their way to Brownsville to spread their message.

The group is known for their adamant opposition of homosexuality and for picketing American soldiers’ funerals, among other things.

They're scheduled to picket the First United Methodist Church, Brownsville Community Fellowship Church, and Livingway Family Church. An elder with WBC, Steve Drain, says the reason behind picketing the First United Methodist Church has to do with their opposition to women pastors, the Brownsville Community Fellowship Church and Livingway Family Church will be picketed because they say the pastors are not truly teaching from the bible.

The three churches don’t intend to engage the WBC protestors. Instead they’ll continue with their regular Sunday morning services as normal. However, a group of community organizations are coming together near the Livingway Family Church to peacefully counter protest the WBC’s message.

Meanwhile, just a few miles down the road, a peace rally will be under way. The Valley Veterans organization, PFLAG, Patriot Guard Riders and several other groups are holding the event at the Veterans' Park off of Central Blvd.

Organizers of both the counter protest and peace rally say the WBC group coming here to spread their message, has actually brought the community together and groups that would normally never really have a reason to unify, are doing just that, coming together to stand up against the Westboro Baptist Church in a very peaceful, nonviolent way.

Again the peace rally will be held at Veterans’ Park from nine to noon this Sunday, May 20, 2012, the counter protest will be held across from the Livingway Family Church off Ruben Torres at 10:30 am on Sunday as well.
