BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Officials say they can be an eye sore and are also causing problems with traffic, NewsCenter 23 Na'tassia Finley has more on their crack down on illegal garage sales.
What's meant to be every now and then quick money maker is turning into an daily biz for some residents in several neighborhoods in Brownsville.
City ordinance allows residents to have a yard or garage sale spanning up to five days once every three months. The City of Brownsville Code Enforcement officers are making sweeps throughout several neighborhoods cracking down on these illegal set ups.
Officials say some people are disregarding the ordinance and setting up shop in their lawns, on their driveways, even in the streets every single day.
A woman, running a yard sale, had not previously been warned, but she didn't have a permit, she was given a simple warning. Code enforcement officers will likely not go so easy if they have to visit this home again for non-compliance.
The fine for repeated violations, not a cheap one, fines range from $500 to $2,000 dollars.
Just one more problem code enforcement is also working to fix, illegal dumping of items after the garage sale.
Code enforcement officers will target other neighborhoods through the rest of the summer.
