Law Enforcement in the Valley is ramping up its seat belt safety campaign.

The campaign began this week and will last until June 1. The Department of Transportation says 943 people died last year because they weren't wearing a seat belt. More than 5,000 others had serious injuries.  And a seat belt ticket costs up to $200.

"Not only is buckling up very important, but it saves lives," TXDOT spokesperson Octavio Saenz said. "Not only is it the law, but also there are groups that are still not getting the message. We have noticed that there is less seat belt usage at night, less seat belt usage from passengers, and also, believe it or not, people in trucks are using their seat belt less and less."

TXDOT says wearing a seat belt gives you a 45 percent better chance of surviving a crash. That increases to 60 percent in a truck.
