EDINBURG - The City of Edinburg is back from their two day trip to the capital to promote the Edinburg City Agenda.

"As the State legislature is convening in Austin, looking at approving a new budget, looking at new laws, it was important that we go and represent the city of Edinburg in making sure that we communicate our needs," said Ramiro Garza, Edinburg City Manager.

And they did just that, talking about issues concerning economic development, local safety departments, transportation, tourism and municipal revenue.

"We visited with a lot of the key leadership in Austin, starting with our legislative delegation here in the Valley, and we were able to have some very productive meetings and the important thing was education, that was out key message," said Garza.

The City knows heavy budget cuts are most likely coming to education funding, and preserving any funding for UTPA is a high priority. Members of the UTPA staff came to Austin to show their concern, but also to communicate about the importance of state funding.

But UTPA has been preparing for these budgets cuts for over half a year now and they think they have found a short term solution.

"We're going to have to go out and look to private foundations, donations and get support there even federal funding. We're going to have to pursue more of that," said Ana Maria Rodriguez, UTPA Senior Vice Provost.

UTPA Administrators realize they can no longer rely on state funding, but they hope legislators realize what affect that cutting higher education funding will have on the Upper Valley.

"According to the latest census figures the Valley has been the fastest growing area in the state, and yet that population is one that needs a high education more than anyone," said Rodriguez.

The City of Edinburg and UTPA both agree that even facing decreased funding from the state won't affect their goal to benefit the citizens and students in the area.
