City of Edinburg Passes New Bike Law
EDINBURG - The City of Edinburg has passed a new bike law that will go into effect on Saturday that is targeting motorist.
The new law, named the Safe Passage Ordinance, will be expanding the current bike lanes by changing the paint color and adding a few new rules for motorist. Edinburg Crime Stoppers Coordinator Balde Gomez stated, "If you are going to be passing a cyclist on the roadway, that only has a single lane, you need to be at least, at minimum of six feet from them."
Those caught violating the law will be given a Class C misdemeanor and could face a fine of up to $500 dollars. The new ordinance will kick-off at the Edinburg Bike Rodeo on Saturday and everyone is invited to the event that teaches cyclists more about bike safety. Sixteen bicycles will be raffled off and children will get to ride through some safety obstacles.
