The City of McAllen voted unanimously to raise the city hotel tax from 13% to 15% beginning in January to help build a new performing arts center. While most commissioners are happy with the decision most hotel owners are not as city commissioner Jim Darling stated, "I'd hate it to move business out of McAllen, but I think if you go to San Antonio or Houston, or any of the large cities, almost all of them have that to support the arts and tourism and hopefully this will attract business as opposed to chasing business away from our hotel people."
