Freedom Fest will be among several citywide events with free admission in Harlingen for the Fourth of July weekend.

It’s the second annual Freedom Fest celebration for Harlingen on July 4 and July 5. Other highlights will include the July 4th “Pet Paw-rade,” the Miss Stars & Stripes Pageant, and the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings will meet the Brownsville Charros at Harlingen Field for a series of baseball games.

FREEDOM FEST

Crowds are expected at Lon C. Hill Park, 1204 Fair Park Blvd., for two nights of free entertainment at Freedom Fest. There will be live music, games, rides, food vendors, business vendors, arts and crafts activities, a comic book expo, a classic car show, and karate demonstrations. Free fireworks displays provided by the City of Harlingen are scheduled for 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The music lasts from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, July 4, and Saturday, July 5. The public is welcome to this family-style occasion with first come, first served seating on lawn chairs and blankets.

Greg Bates will headline the Friday night Freedom Fest lineup. Other entertainers Friday night include Shotgun Band, Paul Treviño, Sidewinder, George & the Texas Outlaws, and Sergio & Ropin’ the Wind. The Saturday night spotlights will shine on La Sombra de Tony Guerrero, Frutty Villarreal & Los Mavericks, Zereno, Risueño, Sass & Brass featuring Ani Tharpe, and Grupo Magico.

PET PAW-RADE

Patriotic fun marking the 238th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence for the United States of America starts early in the Capital of the Rio Grande Valley with the July 4th “Pet Paw-rade.” The public is welcome to line the parade route and enjoy the sights. The RGV Jaycees are accepting entries for the Fourth of July parade, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Jackson Street in Downtown Harlingen.

Private individuals, youth groups, churches, sports teams, entertainers, civic service organizations and businesses are invited to participate as parade entries and vendors. The entry deadline is 6 p.m. Friday, June 27; there is an extra $10 fee for late registration on site the day of the parade.

Floats and entries will be judged by the theme of “most patriotic pets.” Applications are available online at www.rgvjaycees.com. The parade entry fee is $25 and the vendor entry fee is $50. STARS & STRIPES PAGEANT

The Miss Stars & Stripes 2014 Pageant will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, July 4, in Lon C. Hill Park as part of Freedom Fest. There are nine age categories and contestants are urged to pre-register online at www.RebeccaoProductions.com.

The website includes information about wardrobe, fees and photo requirements. For details please call (956) 454-3065. There is no admission fee for the audience; lawn chairs and blankets are suggested for comfortable seating.

RGV WHITEWINGS

The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings baseball team, enjoying its 20th anniversary season, will play home games at Harlingen Field versus the Brownsville Charros on July 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. For ticket information call (956) 423-9464.
