Two Harlingen children are safe after clinging to an inflatable tube off South Padre Island on Thursday.

It happened at Sand Piper beach at around 8:30pm, when emergency crews including the Coast Guard and SPI firefighters responded to swimmers in distress. Constable Horacio Zamora says a 15 year-old boy and a 11 year-old girl got caught in the rip currents.

The rescuers pulled the children out of the water, who were clinging to an inflatable tube. Both were taken to Valley Regional Hospital and are said to be recovering.
