Child Thiefs Grandfather Speaks
The mother of the child caught shoplifting on camera sits in jail and her father speaks out.
The woman accused of encouraging her 4-year-old son to nab a wallet at Downtown Wigs in Wilmington, Del., is in custody.
21-year-old Rickita James of Newark, Del., turned herself into police Monday night after the surveillance video of her allegedly getting her young son to steal the store owner’s wallet was all over the news.
But before she handed herself over, Rickita called her father, admitting she was in trouble.
“She said she needed my help,” her father said.
“She said she’s gonna turn herself in and see what the problem is.”
James’s father wants to remain anonymous.
He is currently looking after his grandson. He says whatever happened that night, he plans to stand by his daughter.
"I know my daughter, she wouldn't really want to be in that situation."
Nevertheless, he also admitted, "But still, yet, if it's her it's bad—you know what I mean?"
James is charged with endangering the welfare of a child and theft related charges.
She is currently being held at the Delores J. Baylor Woman’s Correctional Institution.
