Chevy Adds Electric Spark
New all-electric car will go head-to-head with Nissan's Leaf.
Chevrolet's first fully electric vehicle is slated to hit the roads in 2013.
General Motors executives are predicting the compact Spark EV will appeal to commuters who drive 40 miles or less each day.
Chevy is hoping the Spark will ignite new sales at a time when it's first semi-electric Volt has yet to take off.
Fewer than 4,000 have sold this year, and Chevrolet likely won't make its goal of selling 10,000 by the end of the year.
Chevy is also trailing the Nissan Leaf in sales.
"Even with lagging sales for the Volt, GM still believes electric vehicles are the future and that's why they are committed to building the Spark EV," says CNBC's Phil LeBeau.
When it comes to electric vehicles however, a recent survey finds the majority of consumers are not ready to make the switch, but but Chevy believes as the technology improves and prices drop the market will see a shift.
Whether the Spark EV will be the game changer remains to be seen.
