Cheerleader with Down Syndrome returns to field
Deer Park, TX — A Texas high school cheerleader with Down Syndrome is back on the sideline after being benched and called a liability.
16 year-old Brittany Davila is all smiles now that she's back with her team.
The honorary cheerleader was sidelined after a recent volleyball game and told to cheer in the stands.
School District leaders say it was a misunderstanding and met with Brittany's mom to work out an arrangement that includes Brittany cheering again.
Buffy Davila, Brittany's Mo, "She was a little nervous when we were walking up here but now that she's down there. You can see her she's in her groove I guess."
Matt Lucas, Deer Park Independent School Dist. Spokesperson, "We admit there were some miscommunications but the fact that when we were finally able to meet with the family, everything was resolved in about five minutes, that really says a lot about how far apart we were."
Brittany knows many of the cheers but does not participate in stunts.
There is now a designated area for Brittany while the other cheerleaders perform stunts and if she needs a break,
