Caught On Cam Cop Beating
Security cameras show Alabama police brutally beating suspect.
Two Birmingham, Alabama police officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the results of an investigation into an arrest which took place on March 20th.
Birmingham attorney Charles Salvaggio is representing the suspect who was arrested outside The Downtown Club on First Avenue North.
Salvaggio has obtained surveillance video of that arrest which shows his client, Travarious Daniel, being hit and kicked by police officers as he was prone on the ground with his arms out.
Upon hearing of the existence of the video tape, Birmingham Mayor William Bell met with Police Chief A.C. Roper and his Assistant Chiefs.
None of the men had seen the video at the time of the meeting.
Bell said that he instructed Roper to get to gather all the facts of what happened and report back to him.
The Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Birmingham Police Internal Affairs Division are conducting separate investigations into the case.
Travarious Daniel has been charged with unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle and receiving stolen property.
Police said they would also pursue a possession of a stolen firearm charge against Daniel.
Salvaggio said Daniel wanted the video to be made public because he didn't want anyone else to go through what he did.
Daniel has not been charged with resisting arrest.
The official police report noted that Daniel was arrested with "mimium (sic) force required".
Daniel pleaded guilty to charges of carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest back in 2006.
The allegations come three years after five Birmingham officers were let go after a police chase and suspect beating was caught on dash cam video.
Two officers were acquitted of unnecessary force and civil rights violation charges.
A Personnel Board officer recommended Tuesday that the five officers involved in that incident be reinstated to the Police Department.
