Catholic Church Criticizes Administration on Health Insurance Requirement
RIO GRANDE VALLEY - The Obama administration and the Catholic church are squaring off over a policy decision regarding health insurance.
Many Catholics around the country were read a letter at mass on Sunday criticizing the administration for "an assault on liberty." The Department of Health and Human Services announced last week, that all employers must offer health coverage that includes sterilization, abortion inducing drugs and contraception. This statement has many Catholic organizations up in arms and District Deputy of the Knights of Columbus, James Torline, stated, "They're trying to force the Catholic church, the Catholic hospitals, to go against the teaching of the church when it comes to issues of life. To say these hospitals, that are Catholic funded, Catholic based, that you need to do these abortions is completely against the idea of church and state."
The Catholic church is urging it's members to contact their local Congressman urging them to support legislators who wish to nix the policy.
