Four passengers and a driver face a slew of charges after a routine traffic stop escalated when the driver refused to pull over.

The officer originally attempted to pull the driver over off of expressway 83 going southbound, but the driver would not slow down, the driver then exited into the City of San Benito. The chase continued with Sheriff deputies, Harlingen police and San Benito police involved in the chase.

The driver was heading northbound back towards Harlingen and voluntarily came to a stop at the intersection of Jackson and 5th street. The officer approached the van and that's when things intensified. The driver placed the van in reverse backing up in the direction of the officer. The officer avoided being hit, his unit, not so lucky. That's when the officer fired shots.

Very quickly after, the driver and the four male passengers were arrested and transported to an area hospital with minor injuries, the other hauled off to jail. The other passengers face lesser charges including public intoxication.
