Teresita Garcia is a 39-year-old mother of one and a survivor of stage three ovarian cancer.

“Back in September I had a very sharp pain and they found a very large tumor in my ovary that was contorting,” says Garcia.

Doctor’s said Garcia’s chance of survival was extremely slim. However, Teresita never gave up hope and her sister Margarita made a promise with God in an effort to help her sister.

“We are best friends and sisters,” says Margarita Garcia. “I started going to church and I asked God that if he saved her that I would walk for him like he walked for us.”

Margarita plans to make good on her promise on July 28th. She will walk from her Harlingen home to the San Juan shrine and back. Teresita has been touched by her sister’s sacrifice and support from her family.

“It means a lot,” says Teresita. “They have always been very supportive.”

Teresita gained strength from her family during her time of need, but now has inspired them to become stronger people.

“I was thankful that God didn't take my sibling away and I think she is a very strong woman,” says Margarita.

With her new lease on life Teresita is trying to change for the better and improve from past mistakes.

“I was taking life for granted and I was overweight, but I take better care of myself now and I am happy,” says Teresita.

Her five-year old daughter Lizette is happy for her too. Teresita says her child gives her life meaning.

“You could say she saved me from myself when she came into my life because I was going through depression,” says Teresita. “But when she came into my life everything changed.”

All Teresita asked of God when she was diagnosed with cancer was for her to live long enough to see Lizette turn twenty. Now it looks as though she may be able to see much more.
