Because it is usually not diagnosed in its early stages, it has the worst five-year survival rate of all the major cancers, accounting for 8,000 deaths annually. If caught early, through screenings, oral cancer is almost 90 percent curable.

Since 2001, TAGD dentists have screened over 3,500 people at oral cancer screening events and nearly six percent of those screened have been referred to a dentist with suspicious lesions.
Risk factors include tobacco use, alcohol use and prolonged exposure to the sun. Despite these factors, everyone is at risk. More than 25 percent of oral cancers occur with no risk factors.

In addition to the screenings, the Jack T. Clark Foundation will promote a new mission “To support the oral health of all Texans affected by cancer through education, access to appropriate oral health care and collaborative research.”
