Police say gunman who killed Virginia Tech police officer took his own life.

Virginia State Police say it looks like Thursday's deadly shooting at Virginia Tech was a murder-suicide.

Ballistic tests show the same gun used to kill campus police officer Deriek Crouse was also found beside the body of a man dead from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot.

Police have not yet released his identity.

Shortly after noon Thursday Officer Deriek Crouse had made a traffic stop in a campus parking lot when a man walked up and shot him at point blank range as Crouse sat in his patrol car.

Crouse's in-car video captured images of the shooter.

Half an hour later and less than a half mile away, the suspected killer was found dead.

Investigators can't explain his motive yet.

"At this time we have made no connection that the shooter and officer Crouse knew one another prior to the shooting," says Corrine Geller of the Virginia State Police.

The scene on Virginia Tech's campus Thursday was eerily similar to that of nearly five years ago
when a student shot and killed 32 people before killing himself.

Unlike then, a university lockdown was ordered within minutes of Thursday's shooting.

Police say the gunman was not a Virginia Tech student.
