Tuesday, November 1, 2011 - 8:43am

CAMERON COUNTY - Cameron county officials want register voters to go to the polls and vote for the constitutional amendment election and the county's special election.

Early voting numbers are showing that only about a thousand voters have shown up to the polls currently. The county has more than 170,000 registered voters and Elections Administrator Roger Ortiz says he expected a low turnout, but didn't know it would be so low considering what's at stake in this election, "They're very important. This changes our Texas constitution and so whoever votes on are the only ones who have a word on what we change in our constitution whether we change it or not."

In this election, voters will decide on ten proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution and Cameron county residents will  also vote whether sheriff deputies and jailers should have collective bargaining rights. The last day fo early voting is this Friday and election day is next Tuesday. For voting and polling information visit
