CAMERON COUNTY - The county is temporarily issuing permits for the burning of natural vegetation even though the burn ban for the county had expired on January 7th.

Emergency Management Coordinator Humberto Barrera says this brief period will allow residents to obtain a permit to burn ground debris such as brush, grass and leaves. Mr. Barrera stated, "It actually expired January 7th and with that came the issue of people wanting to burn out in the county and we have been getting a lot of phone calls while the burn ban was in effect. Now that it has expired people can legally burn with a burn permit."

Mr. Barrera anticipates the burn ban to be back in effect at some point this February due to the continuously dry weather conditions.

Personnel at the County Office told me today, 2/10/12 that burn permits are being issued but now there is a $25 fee that is good for two weeks.
Furthermore, the Fire Marshall will need to go the residence first, make an inspection, collect the fee and then issue the burn permit. This is so sad. Give us a break for goodness sake.
