CAMERON COUNTY, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — Cameron County pays big money to house undocumented immigrants.
The Texas Commission on jail standards released data ranking the county fifth in the state, paying more than $6.4 million dollars to house federal detainees during the past two years.
Overall, county jails spent more than $156 million to detain more than 131,000 illegal immigrants across the state. The top four counties paying out the most were Harris, Travis, Dallas and Bexar.
A state law, passed in 2011, requires Texas jails to report monthly estimates of the cost of housing undocumented immigrants.
