Cameron County hoping to seal the deal with SpaceX
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — At the end of the year, Cameron County will likely know if it's been selected to house the next SpaceX launching site, Na'tassia Finley reports Cameron County has high hopes to seal the deal.
The State of Texas, Brownsville Economic Development Corporation and Cameron County officials continue working on building an incentive package for SpaceX as Cameron County Judge, Carlos Cascos stated, "We haven't been told that there's a deadline that we have to have it by. I think the sooner we have a package for them, I think it's more beneficial to everyone."
In the same breath the judge says due diligence is key here, so that each vested group, benefits.
While the vast majority of the incentive package has not been openly discussed, county commissioners have suggested a tax abatement that would be included as an incentive for the private space exploration company, should they choose Cameron County, Texas as their next launch site.
Cameron County Judge, Carlos Cascos, "The way I look at it, in such a way that if SpaceX were not coming we wouldn't generate any ad valorem tax because that property that's out there is basically baron in sand, so it's really not generating and ad valorem tax. So really we're in a good position to bank on the future, of the future tax incentive. The future, increase in ad valorem tax that we will get 10 years down the road."
The biggest obstacle, he says, is now behind us after the General Land Office granted beach closures during launch periods, earlier this year, the judge adds with out that monumental decision, we wouldn't even be as deep into the process as we are now.
