Cameron Co. Elections Office Preparing for Early Voting, Polling Places Open May 2nd

Saturday, April 30, 2011 - 4:13pm

The Cameron County Elections Administration office is preparing for early voting, which begins Monday morning.

"We’ve got four different locations for the city of Brownsville elections coming up, the most popular being the public library, everybody looks towards the public library. We have one here at the main office (954 E. Harrison), we have another one at the Christ the King and one at the university,” said Cameron County Elections Administrator Roger Ortiz.

The turnout for early voting and election day itself is expected to show pretty good numbers since the mayor's race usually attracts voters Ortiz said.

On the ballot this election….

The mayor’s race includes candidates Michael Garza, Edward Camarillo, Viro Cardenas, Antonio Martinez and Pat Ahumada.

The Commissioner at Large "A" position shows Leticia Perez Garzoria, Robert Lopez, Martin Sarkis and Estela Chavez Vasquez.

This election, only commissioner districts one, two and four have available positions.

Fighting for the spot in district one is Ricardo Longoria, Jr. and Roman Perez.

District two, Charlie Atkinson and write in candidate, Jessica Tetreau, will battle it out at the polls.

In district four, PK Patel, John Villareal, and Tony Zavaleta are campaigning to represent city government in that district.

The early voting locations will be open Monday thru Friday next week (May 2- May 6) from 8:30am to 5:30pm, from 11am to 2pm on Saturday and then again Monday and Tuesday of the following week from 8:30am to 5:30pm. So what does a voter need to cast their vote?

“Their voter registration certificate and if they don’t have one they need to have their picture ID with them and if they bring their drivers license that will be sufficient enough, plenty for us to qualify them and get them to vote,” said Ortiz.

If you miss your early voting opportunity you can cast your vote at your designated precinct polling place on May 14th.
