BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — While on patrol Tuesday morning Border Patrol Agents found 70 pounds of marijuana near a drainage pipe in Hope Park which is just across the river from Mexico.
While there they noticed what appeared to be a duffle bag about 70 feet in to the locked drainage pipe.
The city of Brownsville and the Fire Department were called into unlock gate blocking the pipe.
“One of our fire fighters went in then retrieved the bag, they found it, it ended up being 6-8 bundles of marijuana." said Brownsville Fire Chief Lenny Perez.
Border Patrol says the marijuana totaled about 60 pounds. The Fire Department says this isn't the first time this drainage pipe has been used for illegal activity.
"We have seen people use it to get into the United States that's why the reason those gates went up, on a few occasions we have opened man holes that have had people in them." said Perez.
Border Patrol is still investigating how the drugs got into the drainage pipe with a locked gate.
