"It's nice to help out the community, it's nice to be helpful."
A big effort by the Brownsville Independent School District means less fortunate families here in town will be able to have a nice meal on the Thanksgiving holiday.
"Thanksgiving is a time where everyone enjoys a meal together and a lot of them don't have the economic means to put a turkey and all the fixings that come with it."
Campuses across the district, including Burns Elementary, collected canned goods for the last two weeks. The food will be distributed to individual families as well as community organizations.
"There's some people out there that don't have enough money to buy some food, so I decided to donate some for them."
This morning BISD personnel loaded up the non perishable items from burns elementary. Not only will the food donations help out those in need through out the community, but the principal says it serves as a good lesson for the students.
"I think it's important for us to give an opportunity to the students to give back to the community and this is an excellent choice for us to get started since the holidays are coming up."
"People should donate more, not to be selfish, cause there are a lot of other people out there who really need it."
