You can find illegally dumped junk lining alley ways, on streets corners and abandoned in yards in the city of Brownsville.
This weekend residents of Brownsville have the opportunity to properly throw out household junk while earning a little cash for their disposal efforts.
"We really need to clean up the city, and it's easier if the citizens take responsibility to bring their bulky waste from around their neighborhood, around their home and bring it in for a great cause, to clean up Brownsville,” says Brownsville’s Public Health Director Art Rodriguez.
The last time an event like this was held here in Brownsville was about eight years ago, Rodriguez says back then the city handed out about 20-thousand in cash for the trash.
"Essentially what we want people to do is look around in their neighborhoods and bring in old sofas, love seats, water heaters, exercise equipment, things we tend to find as litter on the side of the road," says Rodriguez.
The city has a predetermined pay scale. An old dresser for example, could earn you four to five bucks.
Rather than being illegally dumped, you can dump your junk off at the disposal site, where it will be hauled off to the city landfill.
So where's the city getting the money to pay residents for their trash? Well if you've ever had to pay a buck for your plastic bags at the grocery store because you forgot your reusable bags, here's a chance to get that money back. The money generated from the one dollar “environmental fee” is what's being used to pay out residents who choose to take advantage of the junk drop off.
Brownsville's city clean up event will be held this Saturday, August 13th from 8-12 at Monte Bella Trail Park off of Alton Gloor.
