It's called "Connecting Brownsville: the 2013 Bicycle and Trail Master Plan".

"It incorporates different types of routes, using bike lanes, share roads, and off street trails," said Brownsville Planning Department Planner 1 Eva Garcia.

And it's been selected to receive the Great Texas Trail Head award.

"It's recognized mostly because it involves active transportation, it offers that alternative, use of not needing to use a vehicle," said Garcia. "You can walk the trail, you can ride the bikes, and it also just promotes active, healthy lifestyle."

The fact that it's a completed trail with input from the public including residents, stakeholders, and city employees also helped the city to garner the award.

"Before 2013 and during 2013, we held several workshops, public meetings, we did a survey," said Garcia.

Asking survey questions about the trails at public events, like this year's Sombrero Fest, helped gain a lot of feedback.

"It's really just great to get that news out there that Brownsville is doing this for the community, and that we are one of the leading cities locally in Texas to be pushing the bicycle network and to be promoting that active transportation," said Garcia.
