Monday, December 12, 2011 - 10:21am

BROWNSVILLE - A very special woman is in the running for the country's top Latina mom and is changing the world one student at a time.

Melissa Barrera Sosa is one of Mamiverse's top ten nominees for Latina Moms Changing America. She teaches English as a second language at Livingway Church in Brownsville, is director of the choir, treasurer of the Athletic Booster Club, is a mother and still finds the time to give back to the community each and everyday. The website is devoted to Latina moms and their families and provides news and other helpful information. Melissa believes she can make a difference starting with her three sons and students, "If I can raise them, with my husband's help of course, to be responsible, caring, loving, young men...then that right there will carry over for generations. On top of that, I see my students as my children and so every time one of them walks into my room, I try to encourage them to put positive messages in there. Yes, I teach them to read and write, but I also teach them  how to believe in themselves."

Of the ten nominees, Melissa is currently in third place, if you'd like to vote for her, log on to and the winner will be announced on December 20th.
