Brownsville Teen Wins Big Squeeze Accordion Championship
BROWNSVILLE — Brownsville Veterans Memorial high school student 15 year-old Peter Anzaldua took first place at the annual Texas Folklife Big Squeeze Championship in Houston over the weekend. Anzaldua competed against accordion players from across the state in the 21 and under age group. Peter said he was surprised by his victory, "Shocking and exciting at the same time cause of the journey to be over there and everything came together and felt really good." Christy Anzaldua, Peter's mother, said, "I am very proud of him I am excited and proud he won the championship." For taking first place, Anzaldua won a new accordion, $1,000 dollars and some recording time.
