Abandoned homes, be gone! The City of Brownsville has set out to finish demolishing eight dilapidated houses throughout the city over the next two weeks.

"These homes are the worst of the worst and they're not only in one section of town," said Brownsville permitting director Evaristo Gamez. "They're out there throughout the east side, west side, you know."

And after receiving tons of complaints from neighbors, and nearby residents who noticed strangers committing illegal activities in and around these homes, the city finally decided to take action.

"These homes have been identified for some time and it was funded and that's why we're doing it now," said Gamez.

One of the main reasons the city of Brownsville is demolishing these homes is to avoid squatters and people trying to start fires.

"So in order for them not to be able to come into these houses and beautify Brownsville, the city put a contract out there and we won the bid and we came out to tear it down," said contract Mr. Neri.

Living in a city that's easy on the eyes was another major motivator for Brownsville to work on its rough patches.

"Once you would clean up the area, to tear down the place, the structure that's part of the contract, it beautifies the community, that subdivision, the area, " said Gamez.
