It’s a phone call that several Brownsville Public Utility customers have received recently.

According to PUB spokesperson Ryan Greenfield, “the callers are portraying themselves as a Brownsville Public utilities board employee and is demanding payment and giving an ultimatum that if they don’t receive a certain amount of a payment in certain amount of time, that there service will be disconnected.”

PUB says the scammers are calling from numbers with area codes outside the Rio Grande Valley. They will ask the customers to go buy a pre-paid money card and call them back with the card details to make the payment. PUB says legitimate payments are never made over the phone with a live person.

“We will instruct you to the automated phone line to make a payment or to go to an authorized pay station or to come here. We don’t have the live people who will take payments over the phone,” Greenfield said.

The automated phone number to pay your bills is 956-983-6121.

Brownsville resident, Miguel Treviño says that for his security, he goes to the P-U-B office to pay his bill.

“I prefer to come here and pay in cash,” Treviño said.

PUB reminds the public to never provide a social security number, credit card or bank account information to anyone who requests it during and unsolicited phone call.
