Brownsville prosecutor Brandy Bailey won a prestigious award for her work in the Child Abuse Unit.

Each year, the American Bar Association honors two young lawyers for their work in child advocacy.

Prosecutor Bailey has worked for the District Attorney's office for six years and made the push to open the Child Abuse Unit with the support last year, after child abuse reports more than doubled from 2010 to 2012.

Brandy Bailey, Prosecutor, "In this past year from 2013 to 2014 within the Child Abuse Unit, we've had 57 cases that we've disposed of. We currently have 72 that are pending. Of the 57 that we've disposed, 32 we've sent to prison for 600 years in total."

Luis Saenz, District Attorney, "Imagine a seven and eight-year-old, or a six-year-old little girl or little boy get on the witness stand in front of the judge that he doesn't know who's wearing this big black dress. In front of the jury of 12 members, a bailiff with a gun and have to recount what happened. It's a very traumatic experience and very difficult cases to try."

District Attorney Saenz says that he is looking to add more prosecutors to the Child Abuse Unit to increase the number of convictions.
