Brownsville P.D. Ends Operation No Refusal
BROWNSVILLE — The first ever No Refusal operation, conducted by the Brownsville P.D., is now complete and the DWI initiative added an additional five patrol officers on the streets for St. Patty's Day weekend.
Before the operation, drivers who refused a breathalyzer test would have caused their license automatically suspended. During the No Refusal operation, police got a warrant before taking the person directly to a hospital for a blood draw. Officer J.J. Trevino says, luckily, they never had to go that far, "We had a total of nine arrests for Friday and Saturday. There were zero search warrants issued so everybody complied with the breath test. On Friday, there was four DWI's and three DUI's and on Saturday there were two DWI's."
The No Refusal initiative may be something the department uses more in the future, but there's no set date for a follow up operation.
