The Rio Grande divides them, but fire is what brings them together...

News Center 23 Reporter Na'Tassia Finley has more on how Brownsville Firefighters are helping their brethren in Matamoros.

The Brownsville Fire Department is spreading holiday cheer and help beyond the U.S. border. The nearly 190 firefighters pulled together to help firefighters over in Matamoros,Mexico.

Our firemen realize making a modest wage in Matamoros at a job that sometimes requires more than just fighting fires can be tough, and our local guys want to make sure their counterparts across the bridge have a joyous holiday.

"Things are getting worse over there, we want to try to make an effort to give something to them and their families to make their Christmas." said Cpt. Alfredo Christman of the Brownsville Fire Department.

Toys, candy and turkeys, enough to spread joy to 52 fire fighters and their families, is what the BFD has to offer.

"It's doesn't matter which country you're from, we're all brothers and firefighters." said Cpt. Christman.

The Brownsville Fire Department has held this tradition of helping their fire fighting brothers beyond the border, for the last six years, and this year another group stepped into help, The International Firefighters Motorcycle Group, District # 11. Their generosity has not gone unnoticed over the years.

"The friendship is a very nice thing that's been experienced between the two departments." said Jimmy, a firefighter from Matamoros.
